Plaything - 2002

Plaything toured in 2002, teasing audiences with its physicality and wicked humour.

A goody bag of joy, fun and trantrums shared equally between two friends, or was it?

"Plaything is, unironically enough, a playful piece, and a reminder of the games we all play, as adults as well as children. From the solo opening sequence of self-absorbed play, to the mostly confrontational and competitive interaction between two out-sized kids, the performers offer insight into our own selfishness, viciousness and capriciousness. Toying with the theme of superstition, one of the dancers will not allow any part of her body to touch the floor between spotlighted squares. In the final section the two attach themselves to bungee ropes, enabling them to swing about the stage and around each other in a most comedic way. Entertaining and evocative."

"Wired have created a somewhat charming and somewhat thrilling cat fight in flight. Two performers portray a pair of young girls who are caught in an unending row over the possession of a set of child’s toys. About two-thirds way into the piece, the choreography literally takes-off. The novelty of dancers being airborne eventually fades and we are left with the same circular investigation of the theme. When the music quits, “Playthings” continues. This silence (due to either genius or prior technical difficulties) provides a great showcase for the petty humour of the situation. These last few moments are marvellously funny."
