Metropolis was a collaboration really between Combination Dance Company and Wired Aerial Theatre.

Metropolis was all about life's constant competition and lack of space. Using dance, film and aerial performance the piece examined urban obsessions with image, time and money.

Fighting for space as they competed against each other, the dancers engaged in exciting sequences of unashamed virtuosity and thrilling dynamism. Then the best part: suspended on ropes, aerial performers entered the stage, flying above the first rows of the auditorium and leaping about in stunning slow motion. An ironically glamorous section portrayed the clubbing scene, leading to a calm and dreamlike finale. This was an undoubtedly successful interdisciplinary work: what a spectacle!"

"Wired had the audience hooked on a melange of fashion, Matrix-politics and sensuality. Executed with the professionalism of a fashion show, this performance took a glimpse at working life. Movements were dryly assigned by a computer screen turning the dancers to office workers, the choreographed components of networked slavery. Their escape to freedom was as temporary as the defiance of gravity in the aerial duet, which captivated the audience with its vertiginous charms. Flying instead of falling, these dancers moved in and out of the boundaries that define traditional dance, like entities that bounced between the real and the virtual. Despite dealing with tired themes, Combination Dance lived up to its name, creating a delightful fusion of performing arts and making excellent use of the theatre’s broad staging opportunities. While its music could have been more abstract to counter-balance the visual intensity, Wired proved that mainstream can be beautiful when done with ingenuity."
